Before opening a fire hydrant...

• It leaves the Fire Department devoid of a system for fighting fires, endangering lives and property.
• It alters the continuity of water service in the sector.
• Opening and closing causes drastic changes in pressure which breaks pipes and interrupts water service.

• If there are breakdowns, it delays the restoration of water service.
• Several fire hydrants opened at the same time drastically lower supplies, which can cause a total collapse and leave a geographical area without service.

The misuse of fire hydrants for purposes other than emergencies, firefighting or that have the prior authorization of the Authority, violates the Code on Clandestine Connections or Discharges, Water Theft, Tampering of Water Meters and Other Accessories Owned by the AAA.
The person responsible for such acts will be penalized with:

• The cost of all damages caused to the system.
• A fine of up to $3,000 for each violation.
• The possibility of being charged with a serious crime, aggravated illegal appropriation, and sentences of six months to three years in prison.
