The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) Western Region produces in Mayagüez a soil conditioner, or compost that is ideal for planting ornamental plants and agricultural use.
Is a process by which organic matter is transformed into humus, which is a material similar to soil. This process is achieved due to microbial action in a controlled environment. The end result is a soil conditioner, with several benefits.
Plants require 16 essential elements for their development and reproduction. Three of these, called Macro Nutrients, are required in greater quantities: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).
The PRASA compost contains the necessary measure to benefit the crops. One kilogram of this dry soil conditioner contains 4,900 milligrams of Nitrogen, 58 milligrams of Phosphorus and 1,800 milligrams of Potassium.
It is the most critical element for plant growth since it is a basic constituent of proteins, chlorophyll, and nucleic acids. It helps to maintain the green color of the plants.
It is found inside the cell nuclei of plants. It helps root formation.
It is required in large quantities because it helps maintain cell permeability, participates in the activation of enzymes, protein formation, and fights diseases. It also contributes to the formation of flowers and fruits.
For optimal results, always mix compost with soil. In this way, it maximizes the effects of organic matter on the soil.
The application is 30 - 35 yards per string. This application is repeated every 1 or 2 years.
Plow the land and apply 35 yards per rope of land. This application is repeated every 1–2 years.
It can be applied on top of the grass if it is already planted, or before planting, making a 50/50 mix of compost and soil. Once already mixed the material will be used for planting.
Use as a “mulch” around the tree.
The AAA soil conditioner is produced at the Composting Plant, located in the Sabanetas neighborhood, Carr. PR–342 Km. 0.5 in Mayagüez. Open from 8:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. Phone: (787) 834-7540.
